Refrigerator Not Cooling? Here’s What to Check Before You Call
A warm fridge with a still-frozen freezer is one of the most common appliance complaints we get in Edmonds and the Seattle area. The good news: a sizeable share of these calls are things you can safely check yourself in ten minutes. This guide walks through the homeowner-safe checks in order, tells you when to stop, and explains what a technician will look for if it turns out to be a part failure.
Start with the easy wins
Confirm the fridge is actually running — open the door and listen for the compressor hum and evap fan. If it’s silent, check the breaker and the outlet (plug something else into the same outlet). A tripped GFCI on a kitchen counter circuit is a frequent culprit.
Set the controls to the middle setting and give it 24 hours. Newer fridges, especially bottom-freezer and French-door models, can take a full day to stabilize after a door was left open or a large warm load was added.
Make sure nothing is blocking the interior vents between the freezer and fridge compartments. A frozen bag or a tall item pushed against the back wall can choke off the cold-air channel and leave the fridge warm while the freezer stays cold.
Condenser coils and air flow
Pull the fridge out and locate the condenser coils — on most modern units they’re under the front grille or on the back. A thick layer of dust and pet hair insulates the coils so the fridge can’t shed heat, and cooling suffers. Vacuum or brush them gently. Do this twice a year; it’s the single best fridge maintenance step.
Leave at least an inch of clearance on the sides and back. Built-in and counter-depth fridges are especially sensitive to being pushed too close to the wall.
When the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm
This pattern — cold freezer, warm fridge — almost always points to one of three things: a failed evaporator fan (the fan that pushes cold air up from the freezer), a blocked or iced-over defrost drain, or a bad air damper/thermistor. Frost buildup on the back interior wall of the freezer is the telltale sign of a defrost failure.
You can rule out a simple blockage by unplugging the unit, removing the freezer back panel, and clearing any ice over the evap coil with a hair dryer on low. If it ices back over within a week, you have a defrost-system fault (heater, defrost thermostat, or control board) and it’s time for a technician.
When to stop and call
Stop and book a repair if: the compressor is hot but the fridge never cools, you hear a click-buzz-click every few minutes (a hard-starting compressor), you’ve cleared ice and it returns, or you smell anything burnt. These are part failures, not maintenance, and continuing to run the unit can damage the compressor beyond repair.
A technician will read the thermistor resistance, check the defrost heater continuity, test the compressor start relay, and verify the damper opens — usually in one visit, with common parts on the truck.
