Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Turning? The Fix in 5 Steps
A disposal that hums but doesn’t spin is almost always a jammed flywheel, a tripped overload, or a stuck impeller — all fixable in a few minutes. This is one of the easiest appliance problems to solve yourself. Follow the five steps below in order; if none work, the motor has failed and it’s replacement time.
1. Kill the power first
Always unplug the disposal under the sink or flip the breaker before putting anything inside the unit. The hum means power is reaching the motor — you don’t want your hand in there when it frees.
2. Press the reset button
On the bottom of the disposal is a red reset button. The motor trips it when it overheats. After killing power, press it firmly. If it was tripped, this alone may restore the unit once you clear the jam.
3. Free the flywheel with the hex key
Most disposals have a small hex socket in the center of the bottom. Insert the Allen wrench that came with the unit (or a 1/4-inch hex key) and work it back and forth until the flywheel turns freely. This breaks a jam caused by a lodged object or a stuck impeller.
Once it spins, remove the wrench, restore power, run cold water, and test.
4. Remove the foreign object
If the hex key meets resistance that won’t give, something is wedged. With power off, reach in from the top with tongs or pliers and pull out the culprit — common offenders are bottle caps, fruit pits, bones, and utensils. Then use the hex key to confirm the flywheel turns.
5. When the motor is dead
If the reset button is in, the flywheel turns freely by hand, but the disposal still only hums or is silent, the motor or the start capacitor has failed.
