Ice Maker Not Making Ice? The 7 Checks That Fix Most of Them
An ice maker that stops producing ice is usually a water-supply or signal problem, not a broken mold. These seven checks cover the vast majority of the ice-maker calls we run in the Seattle area, and most take under five minutes. Work through them in order before you schedule a repair — you may not need one.
1. Confirm the freezer is cold enough
Ice makers won’t cycle if the freezer is above about 10°F. Put a thermometer between frozen items and check after a few hours. If the freezer is warm, fix the cooling problem first — see our refrigerator not cooling guide. An ice maker in a warm freezer is a symptom, not the fault.
2. Check the on/off arm and the feeler
The wire bail arm or plastic feeler arm has to drop freely for the cycle to start. Ice clumps, a frozen arm, or packaging pushed against it will keep it “up” and the maker will think the bin is full. Clear the ice and make sure the arm moves up and down by hand.
If the arm is frozen in place, a quick defrost of the ice maker assembly (unplug, hair dryer on low) often frees it.
3. Inspect the water supply
Pull the fridge out and find the shutoff valve on the wall or floor. Open it fully. A partially-closed saddle valve (the small self-piercing kind on copper pipe) is the single most common cause of slow or no ice — they clog with mineral scale. If you have one, consider having it replaced with a proper quarter-turn valve.
Check the braided supply line for kinks. Replace any line that is pinched or more than 5–7 years old; they fail and flood.
4. Clear a frozen fill tube
The fill tube is the spout that delivers water into the mold. If it ices shut — common in humid kitchens — no water reaches the mold even though the valve opens. Shine a flashlight into the freezer and look for a frozen plug at the back. Clear it gently with a hair dryer; don’t chip at it with a knife.
5. Test the water dispenser (if you have one)
If the door dispenser works but the ice maker doesn’t, the supply line and inlet valve are fine, and the fault is in the ice-maker assembly (mold heater, switch, or the inlet valve’s secondary solenoid). If neither works, you’re back to the supply or the inlet valve.
6. Listen for the harvest cycle
Most ice makers cycle roughly every 90–120 minutes when cold and supplied. If you hear nothing for hours and the arm is down, the module isn’t advancing — a sign the mold heater or motor is bad and the assembly needs replacement.
7. When to call a technician
If the freezer is cold, the arm drops, the supply is open, the fill tube is clear, and the dispenser works — but still no ice — the ice maker assembly or the water inlet valve has failed. Frequently asked questions
How much ice should a working maker produce?
A typical in-freezer ice maker produces about 3–5 pounds (a half to two-thirds of a bin) every 24 hours once broken in. A new or just-restarted unit can take 24 hours to dump its first batch.
Why are my cubes small or hollow?
Small or hollow cubes mean low water pressure at the mold — usually a clogged saddle valve, a kinked line, or a failing inlet valve that doesn’t open fully. It’s worth fixing promptly; a weak valve can also leak and flood.
Should I replace the whole ice maker or just a part?
For most brands, the complete ice maker assembly is inexpensive enough that replacing the module (motor, heater, mold as one unit) is more reliable than swapping the individual switch. A technician will confirm which is the better call after testing the inlet valve.
